Schizophrenia:
Schizophrenia is a chronic brain disorder that affects nearly one percent of the population. It's characterized by thoughts or experiences that seem out of touch with reality, disorganized speech or behavior, and lack of participation in daily activities. Difficulty with concentration and memory may also be present. Treatment is usually lifelong and often involves a combination of medications, psychotherapy, and coordinated specialty care services.Symptoms usually first appear in early adulthood. Men often experience symptoms in their early twenties and women often first show signs in their late twenties. Children and adolescents may be diagnosed but on a rare occasion.
Treatment can help many people with schizophrenia have highly productive and rewarding lives. As with other chronic illnesses, some patients do extremely well while others continue to be symptomatic and need support and assistance.
